Roof

Final coat!
Fini!
On Friday, September 29th, 2006 Kass painted the final coat on the bay window Roof, completing the first project on the house!  These pics were taken Saturday morning and have a blue tint in the shade.

One heavy load? :)

On the weekend of 9-10-2006 Kass & her dad Fred Kirchhofer patched up the nail holes in the shingle roof we uncovered over the bay window, and replaced the few damaged shingles along the bottom edge and the top row that was removed some time ago.  Once we paint the shingles it will complete the roofing for the entire house!  We plan on painting it the same burgundy as we used on the Back Wall for the accent trim pieces.
How'm I gonna get
                up there? With a Little
                Help from my Fred
Original shingles from 1907!

We began removing the asphalt roofing from the bay window in the stairs and found the original wood shingles to be nearly all intact underneath!

We had originally planned to use the leftover metal roofing to finish this spot, but now we are thinking we may just leave the wooden shingles there and patch what few holes there are in them.

That being the case, the roof is nearly done!  Just a few replacement shingles and some patches, and the old girl is covered once again!
Restored to original state at last!

Get out here and
                get to work! Lower edge
                completed!
There was a forecast of rain this weekend, so Thursday Kass talked her dad into ripping off the roof on the West side of the house!
Luckily Saturday we were able to get the lower edge on and the transition piece so we only had to finish the long straight pieces on Sunday.
Looks calm for
                now. Let's hope that
                sun lasts the weekend!
Finishing up on Saturday, it looked so calm and clear, we figured there'd be no rain after all.
Just a small bit of clouds were visible from the west... surely it wont rain?
Oh my, look at
                the clouds! Hurry little
                buckaroos!
Well overnight we did end up with a slight drizzle, and just look at the sky!
Went from tank top weather to t-shirt and flannel shirt in less than 12 hours!
Last few screws! Finally
                completed!
The sun burned off a bit of the clouds, just in time for Kass & Fred to put in the last screws!
And now we have a completed roof on the whole house!!!
Angles sponsered by SkilSaw
All angles were cut with Fred's homemade Angle Table shown above.  Sadly, we do have one last section of roof to do above the stairs' bay window, but we're sooooo close! :)
The final section
                to go!

2nd Floor...new
                  roof!
Don't slip Fred!
Watch that first
                step!
In June of 2006 we tore off the lower roof on the back of the house and repaired the minimal damage there.  Once the metal is down it would be hard to work on this area so we repaired the soffitts and painted as well.
Making it
                pretty!
Kassandra touches up the paint.
I'm, too sexy for
                a shirt...
Her son Rick prepares for more tar paper.
Painting the undersides of the roof! In the prime of her life. :)
Mommy's little helper!

Before the roof was too slippery to work on, we repaired the soffitt boards and primed & painted the walls.  Above Kassandra works on the soffitt boards and then primes the wall for it's first painting in possibly 50 years or more!

Left, Jayden primes boards to go up in the soffitts.  He's been a very willing and good helper working on the old house!

................................................................

Way up top!
On November 16th, 19th & 20th, 2005 we repaired the roofing on the front of the house.  All the way up there!
Smiling!
Can I get down
                now?
Kassandra and her dad Fred peeled off the asphalt & wood shingle roof from the front of the house, laid down tar paper and put most of the new metal roof on this weekend!
Here Fred is peeking around the corner looking at all the mess left up here.  Only a few boards needed to be replaced, and we were good to go for the new roof.
Before...
...and after.

Here you can get an idea of the bare boards before & after the roofing was put on.  Rick's Dad Cliff was able to come up and help on the 16th too.
Bare bones
Little by little
Wont let me come out and play!
Above left a shot from inside the Attic after all the old roofing had been removed.  As you can see we had good weather for working on the exposed roof.

Above Kass replaces a board that had water damage after about a century.  You can see two of our horses below as she works away.

To the left, Kass took a picture of me hanging out the window, which was about all I was good for with a pinched sciatic nerve and a numb foot. :(  Hopefully they will save a little roofing for me to do later. :)
Remains to be
                cleaned
Cleanup on aisle
                4!
As you can see though, there was quite a mess to be dealt with before the roofing could go on.
This will be used for landfill but some will make good kindling & firewood for the winter. :)
Life in the
                country
Mountain's
                Majesty
From the peak of the roof, here's the view looking North/NorthEast, looking over our pastures and driveway towards the mountains.
Looking mostly East towards Mt Hood.  This will be similar to the view outside of our Master Bedroom and off the deck on the East.

I'm fixing a
                hole...where the rain gets in...
Up Up and oh my!
Here's the exposed rear Roof where the Kitchen stove chimney once stood.  It was poorly patched and this was where a lot of water damage came into the house.
Here's a look at just how high up we were working on this roof.  You can see Kass & her dad up on the ridge.  Both of them wore safety harnesses while up there.
All together now
Two down! Two to
                go!
Here's a look from above at the left and rear rooftops connecting together.
View of the finished rear roof.  This was the last side with severe damage.

Raindrops wont
                fall on our heads..
...unless we
                stand outside. :)
View of the finished roof over Jayden's room, the Bathroom, and half of the Master Bedroom.

The first row
of tin goes on! What are you
                lookin' at?
On the weekend of October 11th, 2004, we began putting the tin on the left side of the house, where the worst damage had been suffered.  Here, Kass and her dad (Fred) have put on the first row on the flare of the roof. Kass always complains I take pictures of the back sides of people so I included this pic to show her I don't. :)  It's a long way down, I hope they are careful up there!  With my cast on I couldn't help out much. :(

It aint
                pretty but it works!
Fred created our own portable scaffolding unit from one of our tractors and a ladder.  Odd looking, but easier to set up than a regular scaffolding unit.

Y'all wanna
                save that too?
Our friend Harry Howard came out to help.  He tore off the roofing on this section over the Living Room & Parlor, and a few boards we wanted to save as well.
(We really appreciated you coming out Harry!)
I think I can see our house from up here!
Kass tearing off the roofing over the Living Room where the chimney once stood.  The section Kass did and the area to the left Harry worked on has now had all the old roofing removed and has the new metal roof put on it.

Rolls of Sheet metal

The roofing came in large rolls...
...was ran through a machine to be formed...
